Why are young people in China wearing traditional Han Chinese clothes? Is Hanfu nationalistic, or just aesthetic? In this episode I explore some controversial aspects of the movement 00:42, then take you behind-the-scenes of a traditional Chinese makeover I did in Shanghai last year 2:45 (including trying on a concubine outfit that made me feel like a “human burrito” 4:41).

The studio I visited in this video is: Fashion Valley Creative Park (时尚谷创意园), 鼎源路618弄, Dingyuan Rd, Songjiang District, Shanghai, China.

  2. Hey, if it's normal to see Japanese wearing kimono and yukata out in public, then Chinese can wear hanfu as everyday wear.

  3. A lot of arguments I see is how Han chinese us trying to erase other ethnic cultures this way, but I could also bounce that argument back. Well why can't we wear our own traditional clothing why can't we pursue our culture? Just bc we are the majority? If the majority wants to get in touch with our culture, we are somehow evil people? On what logic?

  12. Hanfu is not HanbokBased on the quotes from Korean Kings and authoritative historical documents. Korea Hanbok is the one that was influenced by China Hanfu, not the other way around. Claiming Hanfu's characteristics and styles belong to Hanbok only shows your ignorance. Hanbok shares similarities with Hanfu because ancient Korea adopted Chinese costumes and headgears. You can use them, but you don't have the right to distort history or claim these Hanfu features as Korean origin. Hanfu is for everyone, but Hanfu is Chinese

    5.Samguk sagi 삼국사기 (三國史記. 新羅本紀) : AD 648“春秋又請改其章服，以從中華製” “춘추가 또한 장복(章服)을 고쳐서 중국의 제도에 따를 것을 청하자”" Gim Chunchu 무열왕 asked the Emperor of Tang for permission to change the traditional cloth of Silla, the country shall follow the Chinese style "

  17. Wow why are there always so many hate comment from the Korean …. Your history is written in Chinese character, stop lying to yourself Korean!

    Just to let ppl know, the whole “Goguryeo is found by Korean” is a scam that created by Korean in order to provoke their nationalism due to rise of KPOP culture, but it’s not recognized internationally.

    It is now recognizable that the Goguryeo is found by North East ethnicity that conquer the part of Korea, but they’re not Korean. they later become vessel state of China and had been assimilated into Han Chinese or Chinese minority after thousand of years of sinicization, Goguryeo actually are the north eastern people in today’s China (东北人). It can be say that today’s Korean are actually descent of Han Chinese ethnicity.

    Second , the capital state and culture relics of Goguryeo is found in China, and the United nation organization has declare it as China’s cultural heritage after Korean historians lost the debate with the Chinese historian, so no matter how many hate comment you post, it doesn’t change the fact. even McGrew (history book used by AP history class in the US) recognize Goguryeo as vessel state of China.

    Third, Korean language don’t even exist back then, how can you claim it’s your Korean history? Do Korean even know their culture is greatly influenced by China? Plz draw you self out from these “KPOP NO#1 fantasy.”

  21. it looks so beautiful on you! just one question. would it be bad if a foreigner who was non-asian roots wears it? without mocking or something like that. I want to dress one if I go to China some time, but I'm worried about that. I find Chinese history wonderful and I'm studying it, so it wouldn't be dressing without information.
    I checked online what people think and some people say that Chinese people thinks it's really wonderful, while others don't, so I'm pretty worried.

  23. Lovely photos. Although you look great in all of them, I think the red suited you better. The yellow was pretty, but one of the poses made you look more like a Mexican senorita than Chinese… (see?…you can play anything….casting call!?…) ???

  27. you also have to remember that all the minorities in China wear their ethnic clothing with pride and the Chinese government actively promotes that, but the hanfu never really got that sort of attention so it's nice to have a hanfu revival now. 🙂
