Story: Chinese Fashion
Location: Beijing
Date: 1st December 1999

On the international fashion stage, MARK CHENG is one of the best known names to emerge from China.

In his time Cheng has produced designs for American brands Oleg Cassini and A.J. Bari. He has also worked for the French fashion line Alyce Designs.

Combined with this has been a successful career back home. Since 1991 he has had his own fashion label, called simply Mark Cheng. Rare for a Chinese designer, he has even shown his collections in America.

In 1995 he was awarded the title of ‘China Top Ten Fashion Designers’. He was also chief designer of China Shan Shan Group.

And Cheng shows no sign of letting up in his fashion empire. He presented his latest collection in Beijing recently and produced a stark, simple look for the Millennium.

Like many of his Western contemporaries, Cheng still puts his faith in the simple, sensual power of clothes in black and white. Elegance and purity are central to the collection.

Cheng sees fashion as a potential healer to the upheavals that have marked out China in recent decades.

And as the world’s biggest nation slowly opens itself to greater contact and interaction with the West, designers like Cheng will play a major part in helping to change and shape perceptions of the new China.
